V – Vine

Jesus said to his disciples “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.” John 15:1 NIV. Gardener is probably not the best translation there, it is too generic a term. Jesus was saying that his Father was the “vinekeeper”, which is a far more specific thing. In other words, Jesus was likening himself to this plant, with the Father as the one who looked after him and took care of him.

This in itself shows that Jesus willingly humbled himself to the extent that he had, in his perfect humanity, to be cared for by his Father. He had previously told them “I and the Father are One.” John 10:30, thus showing his deity too. So here is the mathematics that does not make sense to us – Jesus is 100% God and 100% man yet in total is 100% of a person! Like the Trinity we cannot get our heads around it.

He also said, later in that passage about the Vine: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 NIV. We as believers are joined to him as branches on the vine. We rel upon him – as do branches on a plant. So as Jesus is completely dependent on his Father, we are completely dependent upon him. As we do that we will bear fruit in living the lives that he wants.

And that is the very best place to be.
