Forgiveness is at the very heart of the Christian message. Why should that be? It suggests that there is something to be forgiven for. Many people feel that it is only those who commit “big” crimes, such as murder who need to be forgiven. However, it is something that, according to God’s Word, we all need.
Romans 3: 23 tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Now that is not something that we like to hear – we all feel that somehow we are better that other people – some people may need forgiveness, but we’re not like them!
But the important thing is not what I think about myself compared to someone else. It is what God thinks that matters. He looks down and sees that everyone in the world is guilty of sin. And it is he who provided forgiveness in the person of Jesus!
Later in Romans we read that “The wages of sin is death.” BUT… Jesus, the only person ever to live who has not sinned, was put to death – in so doing he took the punishment that you and I deserve so that we can be forgiven.
Praise God for that!
