The Christmas Hymn 3

One of the most beautiful and popular carols is Silent Night. It is Austrian in origin; words by Joseph Mohr, with music by Franz Gruber. There are various accounts of how it came to be written, some with more veracity than others. I am just so glad that it was!

Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child,
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing hallelujah;
Christ the Saviour is born!
Christ the saviour is born!

Silent Night! Holy night!
Son of God, love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace.
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.

Joseph Mohr
