The Christmas Hymn 1

I will be posting a different hymn each day from now until Christmas Day.

Christmas is a time to celebrate the coming of the Lord into this world. Many Christmas hymns have a real sense of joy, none more so than Isaac Watts’ “Joy to the World.”

This hymn is a reminder that the Lord Jesus Christ, born in humble circumstances in a manger, is the King who rules.

Incidentally, for all you musical experts out there, the tune is based on a music by Handel and features at the start a complete descending D major scale!

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love

Isaac Watts
