There has been a great deal of interest in the media over the past week because a manuscript has been found, supposedly containing new information regarding New Testament times. The most spectacular claim to have been made was that Jesus had a wife.
Now it is quite clear from reading the Canonical Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) that Jesus was unmarried. The whole myth is debunked very well by Simon Gathercole of Tyndale House in Cambridge here.
However, the Bible does teach that Jesus does have a bride, and that is the Church – made up of believers of all nationalities and all times in history. One day the Bride and Groom will be united in perfect matrimony when the Lord returns and the Church is taken to be with him for ever. Look at these verses from Revelation:
Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
(Revelation 19:7-9 ESV)
So, yes, in THAT sense Jesus does have a wife!
